to tell you the truth I'm not sure any more I think it was posted on ASSTR not newsgroups but i could be wrong
since i took my fall some things in my memory are clear some aren't anymore.

like i have problems with words .....mostly i've noticed i confuse words begining with the letter C
(like in this sentence had to change it 3 times and once in this one)

oh well such is life i guess.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Less Wrong / Eliezer Yudkowsky
(also to be found on FanFiction.)

I've seen the movies (the first six, at least) and found them to be watchable and reasonably entertaining. However, I've never been tempted to read the books due to a) the huge plot holes, b) the lack of emotional and reasoning maturity from any of the characters, c) the lack of any sensible rules to the magical system, d) I find the world of Magical Britain and its society shallow and repugnant, e) I feel J K Rowling has made enough money from happy (for her) circumstance without my contribution, and f) conversations with friends who have read the books have left me uninspired.

In Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Harry is a clever and erudite, emotionally immature eleven year old brought up by his adoptive parents, Aunt Petunia and Professor Verres-Evans (who teaches science at Oxford). The story is at times funny and morally challenging, it centers around Harry trying to bring Enlightenment inspired reasoning to his study of magic at Hogwarts. Oh, and trying not to go all evil.

In summary, both fans and non-fans somewhat familiar with the original material may like this.

I further recommend Coaster2. Reading "Coming From Behind" led me to read the rest of his writings, and there are several rather good works there.

I just started reading it: Core of Night. So far, the deceleration time does't make sense.

I don't know if I or anyone else has mentioned Wes Boyd and his "Spearfish Lake tales before, but even if his writing has been mentioned before, it's worth mentioning them again. His tales can be found at; http://www.spearfishlaketales.com/index.htm
If you haven't found them before now, I'd suggest starting to read the first story at the bottom of the page and working your way upward. They aren't fancy stories, they're just darn well written and they draw you in. Wes has the ability to make his characters come to life on the page.

Another Vote for Wes Boyd and Spearfish Lake Tales. Not Sci-Fi but very well written and he is actually a few novels ahead of his posting schedule. 3 new chapters every week like clockwork.
