Just finished the Honorverse, all of Ghost and started the Hymm of Battle series. All are just amazing reads and I managed to read them at work, so I doubled my freetime utility!

I have to agree, the Baen Free Online LIbrary is my newest source of joy while I wait ever so patiently for the arc of Subjugation and Insurrection.

I suggest the Honorverse (I'm up to "Flags in Exile" so far) and the stories 1632 and 1633 by Eric Flint.

After that, I haven't had a chance to REALLY get into it, though John Ringo's Ghost, and Choser of the Slain I think it was, were very very good. Go Keldera!

Anything else in that lib that I should particularly hit?

well, to add my two cents, for for just all round Great reading, you cant go past John Ringo's Council wars series, (There be Dragon's, Emarld sea, Against the tide and more recently East of the Sun and West of the moon.)I picked these up cheap in a second hand book store on vacation and couldn't put them down.I mean what ever you want , action , adventure , sci fi , fantasy , romance and more -its all there!!!! Even better, you can now check out the first two on Baen free libary.

Similarly, Empire of Man (with David Weber), is one of those amazing amazing series.'March upcountry "has to be one of my all time fav's.I first read it on baen free libary and was hooked.


So don't take my word, go there and check it out for yourself. you will not be disappointed.

I have just finished "The Name of the Wind", by Patrick Rothfuss. It is the first part of a trilogy, and more than deservedly won the Quill Award for Best Fantasy of 2007.

It's awesome. I am a voracious reader, and quite unhappy if I don't read at least two novels a week. I am happy to reread my favourite novels again and again, and indeed have read "The Lord of the Rings" more than twenty times. However, it is not very often that I finish a novel, and pick it up the next day to start again.

"The Name of the Wind" is the story of Kvothe, a hero in his youth, but now a lowly innkeeper. He is cajoled to tell his story by a scribe who came to seek him out, and for the most part the book consists of Kvothes account, in a storytellers voice, interrupted by interludes in his inn, were we learn more about th scribe, and Kvothes mysterious apprentice Bast.

The quality of the writing is outstanding. However, be warned that this is the first part of a trilogy that was written as one long book, and it shows - there is no comfortably wrapped up ending. On the other hand, the other two parts have already been written, and part two is due out in November.

I consider this book also an excellent introduction to fantasy for those poor misguided souls that haven't read the genre before - although there is the danger that it will raise their expectations too high for most of the run-of-the-mill fantasy.

Go. Buy. Read.

The Name of the Wind is a fantastic read!

I've stumbled across another great read by R. Scott Bakker: The Prince of Nothing Trilogy

1. The Darkness that Comes Before
2. The Warrior-Prophet
3. The Thousandfold Thought

The series is set in a Byzantine world of Crusades. The main protaganist comes out of a eugenics program that is nazi-ish/greek philosophy/buddhist enlightenment with the shaolin martial arts added into the bonus. He infiltrates the Holy War for the purpose of using it for his own ends as well as using it for a stepping stone to destroy humanity's ancient enemy.

This series makes you think... Seriously...

It's not for a faint-hearted. No stone is left unturned and nothing is sancrosanct but it is a fantastic read.

I don't know if you would like it ( it depends on your sense of humor) but I would recommend Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series. If you would like reading the adventers of a human wiseass witch (with a wiseass familar), that is also an assassin in a world full of unhuman Wizards then this series is for you.

Thanks for the recs! I have already read Donaldson, and can't stand May - but I had read only Jhereg by Steven Brust, and then I forgot all about him. So I ordered two more of this cycle, and the first two books of Hamiltons new void trilogy.

I've also ordered Neal Stephenson's Anathem. I, ahem, "acquired" it on the internet and read in on my iPhone while I should have been advancing plasma physics in the lab. It is an absolutely excellent book, on par with the Cryptonomicon. I did not manage to get through Stephenson's Baroque-cycle - although I enjoyed the first book (Quicksilver), the second one (Confusion) was too meandering, living up to it's title. But with Anathem Stephenson is back in style, and it's Science Fiction at it's best: Big ideas, a tight plot, good characterisations. So good, in fact, that I want to have the actual book, so I'll shell out 20 Euros for it. Another sale due to piracy
