Hurricane Dennis

As I prepare for the next big Hurricane, I take a look around.

good luck to you, too...

one think i never understood about the u.s.: why do you guys stick with this rather frail (read:plywood) style of building houses, even if you know that there's a hurricane or tornado or whatnot every once in a while. (and you apparently deem concrete "safe")

no offense, but this seems odd to me, especially in light of the fact that i don't think there's a single house made mostly of plywood or similar stuff in all of austria, where i come from.

The plywood thing comes from what everyone puts up on their windows to try to save the glass.

You drive around town about 12 hours before the hurricane hits, there's more plywood in use than there is concrete.  *grin*

Were you, by chance, referring to trailer parks aka Tornado Magnets?

Not for me it's not. I get to follow it via TELNET & DOPPLER RADAR as it knocks down VSAT links all over the US.

well, some misunderstanding there. I didn't mean the plywood sheets that cover up windows before the big storms, and neither did i mean trailer parks.
My impression from the (admittedly few) homes in the u.s. i've been in was that 75% were built mainly as wood  structures with insulation in between, not steel-reinforced concrete or ordinary bricks, which would be regular in my part of the world...

well, i'm glad that it didn't hit so hard.. :D

Ahh Florida...  The Sunshine, I mean Plywood State.  I'm so glad that I live far enough inland in Gator Country that the most we usually get is lots of rain and a few gusts of wind.  Last year we did have ducks swimming around stop signs though.  Heh, it was amusing.

As for Tropical Storm Emily... I heard on the radio this morning that she's expected to develope hurricane status later today... looks like she's aiming for the Gulf and going to go along a pick up the crumbs Dennis left behind.

Oh what fun

At least in the area of FL I live in, Almost all homes (real Homes) are made of Concrete Blocks, The 2 stories have wooden 2nd floor, but the 1st floor is still Concrete....

Also from experience when I lived up in PA, Most homes up there are More wood than down here, Normally it's Concrete blocks for the foundation, but then wood the rest of the way.
