think it is because of 2 things:
All gods are afraid of being completely killed so they won't put their butts on the line.
They have been so beat down in the past that they are afraid even though they can see the One has been weakened.

Just weighing in with my own opinion here.... I have to say that I read "Wizards First Rule" when it first came out and I don't honestly remember enough about it to say the bad guy was too dark.....but I do remember loving it and the following stories up to the last I read before I forgot ...

The problem might be that it could be possible to accidently (sp?) give spoilers to a new reader who has not gotten to the last published work and might go to a FAQ immediately upon arrival.
